Problem for November 2, 2009

The sum of two numbers is twenty-six. The greater number is six more than four times the lesser number. What are the numbers?. Be sure to use a let statement to define the varibles you are using. Write an equation illustrating the situation given. Sove the equation step by step and label your answers clearly.

  3. The equation would then be a + (4a + 6) = 26

  4. Combine like terms 5a + 6 = 26
    use a (-6) on both sides of the equation to combine the constants. The resulting equation is then : 5a = 20. Using the inverse operation of multiplication, then divide both sides by 5 and the solution is a=4.
